First Successful Docking of Two Commercial Satellites in Orbit

In 2020, Northrop Grumman's Space logistics, a commercial satellite life extension service, successfully docked two commercial satellites in orbit for the first time. The service connects Space logistics' life extension vehicle to a satellite of the International Telecommunications Satellite Corporation (INTELSAT) that is running low on fuel, and by refueling the satellite and towing it back to orbit, the life extension vehicle is expected to extend the life of the satellite by five years. While the mission is entirely commercial, it also has significant implications for the military, which is considering using Space Logistics' services to extend the life of its satellites. Commercial in-orbit satellite services may go beyond mere refueling.

After completing a successful docking in February, Space Logistics announced a partnership with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on the Robotic Service for Geosynchronous Satellites (RSGS) program. The project will aim to build the first commercial spacecraft with a robotic arm that can be used to repair, extend the life of, assemble, inspect or relocate other spacecraft in orbit. "Space Logistics is bullish on the prospect of the military purchasing satellite life extension services, and the Defense Department has expressed interest. Other companies are also eager to participate in providing these services. Most notably, Astroscale entered the field in June, offering its own in-orbit repair solution. Perhaps in-orbit repair will not be as viable or cost-saving as hoped, but 2020 is the year when the concept becomes a reality.
