What Are Frame Drums Made of?

Pulished on Mar. 15, 2021

Frame drums were used by ancient civilisations in the Middle East some 5,000 years ago. They were later adapted by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Romans also used tubular drums, whose skins extended at the ends of the hollow shell.

The shell of the drum is usually made of wood. Commonly used woods include maple, birch and poplar. Some drums have shells made of metal. Commonly used metals include steel, aluminium, brass and bronze. Sometimes, synthetic materials are used to make the shells. These materials are usually strong hard plastics.

Materials of Drums

Drums can be made of various materials such as wood, metal, plastic, and composite materials.

Wooden drums: traditionally, drums have been made from wood, specifically maple, birch, oak, or mahogany.

Metal drums: some drums are made of metal, including steel, brass, and aluminum. Metal drums are typically used in heavy-duty applications as they can withstand harsh conditions.

Plastic drums: Plastic drums are lightweight and commonly used in industrial settings to store and transport liquids and chemicals.

Composite material drums: Composite materials such as fiberglass and carbon fiber are sometimes used to create drums that are durable and lightweight.

Making hardware components

Metal hardware components are manufactured using precision metalworking equipment Drumhead material is made by cooling hot liquid plastic on large metal rolls to form a solid and then stretching it between smaller metal rolls to produce a thin film.

Wooden hardware components are carved out of blocks of wood. Plastic hardware components are often manufactured using a method known as injection moulding. The process involves heating the plastic until it melts, then injecting the molten plastic into a mould in the shape of the desired component, allowing the plastic to cool back to a solid, opening the mould and then removing the finished component.

Making the shell

● Metal shells are made by a variety of methods, including casting (molten metal is poured into a mould in the shape of a shell) and machining (metal is shaped using various metalworking machines, such as drills and lathes). Plastic shells can be made using injection moulding.

Most shells are made of wood. Wooden shells are made from large, thin planks of wood called veneers. The veneer is cut from the timber using a large saw and then transported from the timber company to the roller manufacturer.

A computer-controlled saw is used to cut the veneer to the right size to make the shell. The cut pieces of veneer are sorted by size and stored at controlled temperature and humidity until required.

Eight pieces of veneer of the right size are cut through the glue press. The machine applies the glue to the plywood as it passes through .The veneer pieces are then rolled together to form a cylinder consisting of approximately 7-9 layers of veneer. The rolled veneer is inserted into an appropriately sized metal mould to make the desired shell.

Various methods exist to apply pressure to the veneer bonded layers within the mould. The bag inside the mould can be inflated to apply pressure. Water or oil can also be used to apply pressure. The glue can be allowed to dry slowly on its own, or an electric current can be applied to dry the glue quickly.

Remove the shell from the mould. It is then cut with a rapidly rotating blade so that the edges are at a 45° angle. In other words, the veneer layers are cut at slightly different heights, with the innermost layer being the shortest and the outermost the highest. The angled edges will allow the head to fit into place.

Sand the shell with a high-powered sander to produce a smooth surface. It will then be dyed or painted with shiny decorative plastic sheets in various colours and patterns. If it is stained, it is rotated and at the same time sprayed with various coloured wood stains. The stains are then dried quickly with UV light. A clear, glossy top coat is then applied in a similar manner and dried.

The compact and high-precision metal spinning machine produced by Leichman Automation Technology Co., Ltd. is particularly suitable for the production of wind instruments and drums. Good versatility and flexibility are manifested in the application of the musical instrument industry. This series of CNC metal spinning machines can perform spinning, spinning out the convex surface, and closing. The spinning processing of the rotationally symmetric hollow body is fast, the programming is accurate, and the dimensional repeatability is high.
