What is the Difference Between Metal Spinning Machine Forming and Stretch Stamping?

Pulished on Mar. 16, 2020

Whether you're a manufacturer, a producer, or an engineer, you know that metal forming is essential for creating some of the most common components in our everyday lives. The two primary forms of metal forming are stamping and forming. Both have unique advantages and disadvantages to consider when deciding which is best for your project. As a Metal Spinning Lathe Manufacturer, we would like to share with you the difference between forming and stamping.

What Is Forming?

Forming involves shaping metals by applying force to them in order to change their shape without cutting or adding material. This process can be done through various methods such as extrusion, spinning, rolling, forging, hydroforming, powder metallurgy, etc. Depending on the type of forming process being utilized, there may be more setup time involved than stamping and increased cost due to tooling changes required between production runs. Forming is often used when more intricate shapes are required that are not possible with stamping alone. It also has considerably greater strength than stamped parts due to its ability to work to harden metals during the forming process, which increases the part’s tensile strength properties over those obtained through stamping alone.

What Is Stamping?

Stamping is used to create thin sheets of metal into specific shapes. It utilizes a die press with upper and lower dies to cut, bend, draw, or punch the sheet into the desired shape. Stamping can be used for both small and large production runs because it requires no tooling changes between jobs. Generally speaking, stamping requires little setup time, as well as minimal maintenance costs in order to achieve high-volume production, and runs quickly and efficiently.

Product Motion Principle of Metal Spinning Machine

Its movement principle is to provide clamping force through the tail top, which can drive the blank to rotate with the main shaft. The cutter wheel allows the blank to extend from point to line, from line to surface according to the predetermined tool path, and then forms. The difference lies in the CNC spinning, which is controlled by the CNC machine tool during the spinning forming path, and the gap between the cutter wheel and the mold. CNC machine tools have high running accuracy, good equipment rigidity, and large processing power, so the products manufactured are of good quality and stability, and have good control over product accuracy.

Difference Between Forming and Stamping in Metal Spinning Machine

Both forming and stamping are two primary forms of metal forming. The specific differences and advantages are as follows:

Principle

Spinning molding is to control the flow and deformation of the blank by the path of the cutter wheel, while the drawing process is to control the flow of the blank through the cooperation of the upper and lower concave die.

 Mold

To make the same metal forming product, only one core mold is required for spinning molding, and two convex and concave molds are required for stretch stamping. The manufacturing cost of the mold is usually 3-6 times that of spinning. The manufacturing cycle of the spinning die is shorter than that of the drawing die, and the size is easier to modify.

 Material

Spinning thinning rate is usually about 30%, stretch stamping is about 10% thinner, and the thinning rate is relatively larger, while stretch stamping requires 5-10mm blanks, required materials The cost is bigger.

 Processing

For some simple hardware molding products, there are many stretching and stamping processes, including basic processes such as blanking, molding, and trimming. Some products require multiple stretching processes during the molding process. Fast, while spinning forming and cutting can be completed on a CNC spinning machine at the same time, but the processing speed of a single piece will be slow; for some products with long or special drawing height, stretch stamping will cause product cracking, but Spinning makes it easier to shape the product.

Product differences: On the surface of the product, the spinning pattern is distributed in a circle, and the stretch marks are distributed in a vertical line. In terms of strength after product molding, the strength of the spinning product will be better than the strength of tensile stamping a lot.
